Cracovia Danza Court Dance Festival

The 9th “Cracovia Danza” Court Dance Festival

(Krakow: Villa Decius, the Wawel Royal Castle, the Main Market Square, the Barbican, streets of the Old Town)
August 2nd - 10th 2008

In August 2000 the first edition of “Cracovia Danza” Court Dance Festival was organized in Krakow. From that time the event has been held annually and continues to draw to Krakow a great number of court culture enthusiasts from all over the world.
This year the Festival will be run from August 2nd to August 10th. The 2008 Festival’s leitmotif, “Court dance in countries of the Orient – India” refers to the “Year of India in Poland” celebrated this year. Within the Festival’s framework a variety of engaging events will be presented (performances, concerts, spectacles, court dance presentations by children’s and youth dance ensembles, parades of the Festival’s dancers and participants along the streets of the Old Town, the Grand Ball for the audience, dance workshops).
It is particularly worth recommending the following events:
- the premiere of “Poland – India - Conversations” performance – a project of the “Cracovia Danza” Court Ballet produced in collaboration with Sanjib Bhattacharya from Amity International School (New Delhi, India) and Maria Pomianowska with her ensemble;
- the "Jalsaa" spectacle performed by "Dhawni" a Kathak dance group from New Delhi ;
- an Indian music concert played by Maria Pomianowska with her ensemble;
- the performance of “Chess”, inspired by Jan Kochanowski’s poem, which confirms the popularity of this regal game which originates from India (from the repertoire of “Cracovia Danza” Court Ballet).
As in previous years, Villa Decius, co-organizer of the Festival, will host dance workshops which will be led by prominent experts: Barbara Segal (English dance), Marie Claire Le Corre (French dance), Barbara Sparti (Italian dance), Leszek Rembowski (Polish dance), and Sanjib Bhattacharya (Indian dance).
This year’s art exhibition, “Indian motifs in European ballets”, presented at Villa Decius, will display authentic Indian costumes and masks as well as designs of European ballet costumes with Indian elements in this way completing the outline of this rich and fascinating culture.
